What is graphium doson?

Graphium doson is a species of butterfly belonging to the family Papilionidae. It is commonly known as the Golden Birdwing butterfly or the Greater Golden Birdwing. It is found in India, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China.

The wingspan of Graphium doson ranges from 12-14 cm in males and 13-15 cm in females. The male has black wings with a yellowish-green patch and a white band on the hindwings. The female is larger than the male and has brown wings with yellow spots and markings.

Graphium doson is found in forests and woodlands at elevations ranging from 200 to 1500 meters above sea level. The larvae of this butterfly feed on the leaves of the Aristolochia species of plants, which contain toxic chemicals called aristolochic acids.

The Golden Birdwing butterfly is considered to be one of the largest and most beautiful butterflies in the world and is highly sought after by collectors. It is listed as a protected species in some countries. Habitat loss due to deforestation and illegal collection for the butterfly trade are the major threats to this species. Conservation efforts are being undertaken to preserve its habitats and prevent its illegal trade.
